First decide whether the messages appear to be automated, or coming from a single user.

To prevent automated spam (spam bots), enable "Require CAPTCHA" in Settings.

For spam from an individual user, try banning the user. At your Messages page, select the unwanted messages and click "Ban".

Some users have dynamic IP addresses, which means that bans are less effective against them. You can strengthen bans by selecting them in your Blocked users list and clicking "Strengthen". Note that this can prevent other users of the same ISP as the banned user from accessing your Cbox.

If you have a Premium Cbox, you have access to powerful access control features. For a very effective abuse-resistant configuration, enable the option "Users must be registered on your Cbox before posting" at your Users page, but disable the option "Users can register their own names on your Cbox". In this configuration, you control who is able to post by registering and deleting users from your Registered Users list.

This configuration is particularly useful if you leave "Users can register their own names on your Cbox" enabled for most of the time, only disabling it when the chat is being disrupted – after disabling the option and deleting the disruptive user's account, the user will no longer be able to post from any computer or connection.

Some other options you may want to consider if you experience recurring abuse of your Cbox:

  • Place your Cbox in a members-only or private area of your site, or require login before displaying your Cbox.
  • Generate a new Security tag and republish your Cbox. This revokes access for any user who may have a link to your Cbox but no longer has access to the page it is on.
  • Implement User Integration (Premium only), which ensures only users who are registered on your own site can post.
  • Delegate moderator authority to users who are able to monitor your Cbox during times you are not.
